How to Scrap a Car in England
How to scrap a car legally: finding an authorised treatment facility, the certificate of destruction, telling DVLA, getting paid, and what to remove first.
Scrapping a car is straightforward once you know the rules. The most important one is simple: a car can only be scrapped at an authorised treatment facility, usually called an ATF. Scrapping it anywhere else is illegal, and if the paperwork is not done properly you could stay liable for the car.
Step 1: Find an authorised treatment facility
An ATF is a site with an environmental permit to drain and dismantle vehicles safely, removing fuel, oil, coolant, batteries and other hazardous parts before the rest is recycled. Many ATFs are vehicle dismantlers or scrap yards, and many will collect the car from you.
Not every licensed scrap metal yard is an ATF. On Scrap Market, you can use the "Takes scrap cars" filter on area pages to find yards that say on their own websites that they take end-of-life vehicles, then confirm with the yard that it is an authorised treatment facility. GOV.UK also has a finder for vehicle scrapyards.
Step 2: Get your certificate of destruction
When an ATF completely scraps a car, a light van or a three-wheeled motor vehicle, it must give you a certificate of destruction within 7 days. This certificate is your proof that you handed the vehicle over for scrap. Without it, you could still be liable for traffic penalties and vehicle tax on the car. Keep it safe.
If the ATF decides to repair the vehicle and sell it instead of scrapping it, no certificate of destruction is issued. Treat that like selling the car and make sure the keeper details are updated.
Step 3: Tell DVLA
DVLA needs to know the car has gone to an ATF. Have your V5C log book to hand, because you will need the reference number from it. The process is explained on GOV.UK. Once DVLA has been told, any full months of vehicle tax left are refunded, and a Direct Debit for vehicle tax is cancelled.
Also cancel your insurance and any breakdown cover, and remember to remove your private number plate first if you want to keep it, because the transfer must be done before the car is scrapped.
Step 4: Get paid properly
When an ATF scraps a car in England or Wales, it must pay you by bank transfer or cheque. Cash payment is illegal. If the ATF repairs and sells the vehicle instead, it can pay by any method. You will usually be asked for photo ID and proof of address, just as at any licensed scrap yard. See why scrap yards cannot pay cash.
What decides how much you are paid
- Weight. Much of a scrap car's value is its steel, so heavier vehicles are usually worth more.
- Parts. Working engines, gearboxes, alloy wheels and the catalytic converter can add value, especially on popular models.
- Whether it is complete. Missing parts, especially the catalytic converter, usually reduce the price.
- Collection. Free collection is common, but some yards pay less if they collect.
- The steel market. Prices follow scrap steel prices, which move over time. See how scrap metal prices work.
Before the car goes
- Remove personal belongings from the glovebox, door pockets and boot.
- Take out anything you want to keep, such as a dash camera, child seats or satnav.
- Transfer or retain a private number plate before scrapping.
- Have the V5C log book, your photo ID and proof of address ready.
- Get a couple of quotes. Prices for the same car can differ between ATFs.
Scrapping a car without the log book
You can often still scrap a car without the V5C, but expect the ATF to ask for other proof that you own it, and some will pay less or refuse. Check with the ATF before you book. DVLA must still be told that the car has gone for scrap.
Common questions
Where can I legally scrap my car?
Only at an authorised treatment facility (ATF). Scrapping a vehicle anywhere else is illegal. Many vehicle dismantlers and scrap yards are ATFs, and many will collect.
What is a certificate of destruction?
Proof that you handed your vehicle over to an authorised treatment facility for scrap. The ATF must give you one within 7 days of scrapping a car, light van or three-wheeled vehicle.
Can I be paid cash for scrapping my car?
No. In England and Wales, an ATF that scraps your car must pay by bank transfer or cheque. Cash is only allowed if the ATF repairs and sells the vehicle instead.
Do I get my car tax back when I scrap my car?
Yes. Once DVLA has been told the car has gone to an authorised treatment facility, any full months of vehicle tax left are refunded.
