- Find an authorised treatment facility.
- Get your certificate of destruction.

- Get paid by transfer or cheque.
Common questions
Where can I legally scrap my car?
Only at an authorised treatment facility (ATF). Scrapping a vehicle anywhere else is illegal. Many vehicle dismantlers and scrap yards are ATFs, and many will collect.
What is a certificate of destruction?
Proof that you handed your vehicle over to an authorised treatment facility for scrap. The ATF must give you one within 7 days of scrapping a car, light van or three-wheeled vehicle.
Can I be paid cash for scrapping my car?
No. In England and Wales, an ATF that scraps your car must pay by bank transfer or cheque. Cash is only allowed if the ATF repairs and sells the vehicle instead.
Do I get my car tax back when I scrap my car?
Yes. Once DVLA has been told the car has gone to an authorised treatment facility, any full months of vehicle tax left are refunded.
